TL;DR
Every Temu order now has tariffs. The $800 duty-free exemption for Chinese goods was eliminated. Depending on what you're buying, tariffs add 25-57% to the listed price. A $30 item from Temu actually costs $38-47 after duties.
That loophole is closed. The de minimis exemption for Chinese goods has been eliminated. Now every Temu order, no matter how small, faces import duties.

Temu has started collecting estimated duties at checkout for many orders. Look carefully at your order total — there may be a line item for "import duties" or "tax." If Temu doesn't collect duties at checkout, the shipping carrier (USPS, FedEx, or UPS) will bill you when the package arrives.
⚠️ Watch Out
If Temu doesn't show duties at checkout and your carrier doesn't collect them, you might think you got lucky. You didn't — CBP may send you a bill later, or the carrier may hold your package until duties are paid. There is no legal way to avoid duties on Chinese goods in 2026.
It depends on the product. For items where Temu's base price is 60%+ cheaper than Amazon, it can still be a good deal even after tariffs. But for products where the price difference is small (20-30% cheaper), Amazon or Walmart is likely better once you factor in duties plus faster delivery.
Quick rule of thumb: If Temu's price is less than half of Amazon's price for the same item, it's probably still cheaper after tariffs. If it's more than half, check Amazon first.
Amazon: Duties already included in the price. Free 2-day shipping with Prime. Easy returns. Often competitive on price once tariffs are added to Temu.
Walmart: Similar to Amazon — duties are baked in. Free shipping over $35. Growing marketplace with competitive prices.
Non-China platforms: Some sellers on Etsy and specialty sites source from Vietnam, India, or domestic manufacturers. These products may still qualify for the $800 de minimis exemption.

No. There is no legal way to avoid import duties on Chinese goods. The $800 duty-free exemption has been eliminated for China.
Temu's prices themselves haven't necessarily increased — but import tariffs now add 25-57% on top of the listed price. Some sellers have also raised prices to partially absorb the duty cost.
For some products yes, especially when Temu's base price is 60%+ cheaper. For products with a small price difference, Amazon is often better once tariffs are added.
If you return an item, you can apply for a duty refund with CBP, but the process is complex for small amounts. Most consumers don't bother. Factor this into your purchase decision.
Shein's model is similar to Temu but focuses almost exclusively on fashion. The tariff impact on Shein is particularly severe because clothing faces some of the highest MFN rates (16-28%) on top of Section 301 (7.5%) and Section 122 (10%).
👗 Shein Clothing Haul — $120 Order
5 items of synthetic clothing from Shein
Tariff rate: ~48% (18% MFN + 25% S301 + 10% S122 - some items lower)
Estimated duty: $57.60
Total cost: $177.60 — that's 48% more than the listed price

Before ordering from Shein: Use our De Minimis Calculator to check your order's estimated duty, then compare the total cost against domestic alternatives like ASOS or H&M.
If you shop on AliExpress or order samples from Alibaba, your orders are now significantly more expensive. The elimination of the $800 de minimis exemption for Chinese goods means every order — regardless of size — faces import duties.
Import duties on Chinese e-commerce goods stack across three layers simultaneously — MFN base duty, Section 301 China-specific tariffs (7.5–25%), and the Section 122 global surcharge (10%). For the complete breakdown with worked examples, see our step-by-step import duty guide.
Example 1: $30 Phone Case from AliExpress
Product: Phone case (plastic article)
MFN: 5% + Section 301: 25% + Section 122: 10% = 40%
Duty: $12.00 → Total cost: $42.00
Example 2: $80 Dress from Shein/AliExpress
Product: Women's clothing (synthetic fiber)
MFN: 28% + Section 301: 7.5% + Section 122: 10% = 45.5%
Duty: $36.40 → Total cost: $116.40
Example 3: $200 Electronics Kit from AliExpress
Product: Consumer electronics
MFN: 2.5% + Section 301: 25% + Section 122: 10% = 37.5%
Duty: $75.00 → Total cost: $275.00
Temu and Shein have started incorporating estimated duties into the checkout price for most orders. Check the line items carefully before confirming.
AliExpress and Alibaba typically do not include duties in the listed price. You'll pay the product price at checkout, then receive a duty bill from the shipping carrier (UPS, FedEx, DHL, or USPS) at delivery. If you refuse to pay, the package is returned.
Check the country of origin. Some Alibaba sellers source from Vietnam or India. If genuinely manufactured there (not just transshipped), the goods face Vietnamese or Indian tariff rates — no Section 301.
Source from non-China platforms. Products from Vietnam, India, and other countries don't face Section 301 tariffs. Total rates are typically 10-30% vs. 35-72% for Chinese goods.
